Agriculture is the backbone of our national economy. The progress of the nation, therefore, is linked with the advancement of agriculture. Realizing the scope and importance of agriculture, the Government has rightly made a policy decision to invest a major share of its plan allocation for agricultural development.

Agricultural research and education has been considerably advanced in this country. To bridge the gap between the productive technologies available and their rapid transfer to the farmers, appropriate training of practicing farmers, in-service extension staff and the agricultural teachers and trainers is very crucial in increasing agricultural production. Keeping these aims in view, the scheme of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) was initiated by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) in the country are the primary links for the farmers to know about the agricultural technologies being generated. They act as training centres for the transfer of technology with an aim to reduce the time lag between technology generation and their transfer. The need for enhanced production and productivity, need to address the issues of equity and uneven development, need to understand the importance of sustainable agriculture and to enhance profitability in agriculture are the fourfold challenges in India. These challenges have to be faced by researchers and also those who interface with the farmers to identify the constraints and opportunities, tests new technologies and help in their adaptation and adoption.
